How to Restore a Solid Brass Vintage Desk Lamp with Heavy Verdigris
There's something incredibly satisfying about bringing a neglected vintage piece back to life. This solid brass desk lamp arrived with years of oxidation and heavy verdigris covering much of its surface. While it looked beyond saving at first glance, a careful restoration revealed the beauty hiding underneath.
With the right technique and a few quality restoration products, even heavily corroded brass can often be restored to a beautiful finish.


What is Verdigris?
Verdigris is the bright green corrosion that forms on copper, brass, and bronze when these metals are exposed to moisture, air, and other environmental elements over time. Unlike ordinary tarnish, verdigris develops into a thicker, powdery layer that can trap moisture against the metal and cause further deterioration if left untreated.
Before attempting to remove verdigris, it's important to confirm that the item is made from solid brass rather than brass-plated steel. An easy way to check is with a magnet. Solid brass is non-magnetic, so if a magnet sticks to the item, it is likely made from steel with a brass-plated finish, which requires a different restoration approach.

Products You'll Need
For this restoration, we used:
- Haydn Cotton Rags – ideal for applying cleaning solutions, rinsing and polishing.
- Haydn Green Bucket – perfect for mixing your cleaning solution.
- Haydn Extra Fine Steel Wool #0000 – the finest grade available, designed for gently removing corrosion while polishing brass without leaving deep scratches.
- White vinegar
- Table salt
- Warm water
- Mild dishwashing liquid
- A quality brass polish

Step 1: Mix the Cleaning Solution
Rather than immediately attacking the corrosion with abrasives, start with a chemical clean.
Using the Haydn Green Bucket, mix:
- 1 cup white vinegar
- 1 tablespoon table salt
This solution helps dissolve verdigris while minimising unnecessary abrasion.

Step 2: Soften the Corrosion
If you can't remove the cables and socket, wet a Haydn Cotton Rag with the vinegar solution and wrap it around the brass for 5–10 minutes. This allows the solution to soften the verdigris, making it easier to remove.


Step 3: Remove the Verdigris
Using Haydn Extra Fine Steel Wool #0000, gently scrub the treated area in circular motions. You should see the green corrosion begin to lift from the brass.
Work in small sections, repeating the process where heavy verdigris remains. Avoid applying too much pressure—the aim is to remove the corrosion, not the brass.

Step 4: Neutralise the Surface
This step is essential.
Any remaining vinegar or salt left on the brass can encourage corrosion to return.
Using fresh Haydn Cotton Rags, follow this process:
- Wipe the lamp with a cloth dampened in clean warm water.
- Wipe it again with a cloth dampened in warm water containing a small amount of mild dishwashing liquid.
- Wipe once more with clean water.
- Dry the lamp thoroughly with a clean Haydn Cotton Rag.
Taking a few extra minutes here helps ensure your restoration lasts.

Step 5: Finish with Brass Polish
Once the lamp is completely dry, apply a quality brass polish using a clean Haydn Cotton Rag.
Allow the polish to haze according to the manufacturer's instructions before buffing with another clean rag until the brass develops a rich, even shine.
This final polish helps:
- Restore a richer brass colour.
- Create a more uniform finish.
- Enhance the natural lustre of the brass.
- Leave a protective coating that helps slow future tarnishing.
